8 May 2025 saw an Outlook Desktop App error which mainly affected businesses with a domain based Microsoft Exchange Online email service running in the Outlook Desktop app, also known as Classic Outlook. We have also noted some smartphones have also been affected.

This error renders the desktop version of Outlook unusable, and sometimes the email app on smartphones
The Microsoft Outlook App on mobile phones and tablets still works fine
Browsing to outlook.office.com to send and receive emails also still works fine
The problem had only been apparent for 24 hours or so and there was no official advice from Microsoft available
Alex found the solution on Reddit, one the best IT forums we see
Admin console, Identity menu option under the Admin Center heading (show all)
Search for Microsoft Information Protection API > choose Properties > Enable for users to sign in Yes
(Applications > Enterprise Applications > Applictation Type Microsoft Applications > sort alphabetcially > Microsoft Information Protection API > Properties)
